Soul music is a genre in music which originally inaugurated from the United States. It is also believed that it was created by African Americans who resided particularly in the cities of Memphis, Tennessee, Chicago and Detroit. This musical genre is a combination of rhythm and blues with the persuasion of gospel music. The creation of Soul music was brought up by the experience of the Black Americans during the period of slavery. This genre was formed to be sanctifying testimonials from the Black Americans, and created them into a kind of music with the collaboration of rhythm and blues.
Soul music is executed by performers accompanied with very emotional renditions. The very feature of a Soul music is an appealing rhythm, though somewhat tricky, it is being carried out by the performer by adlibs of freestyle improvisation of lyrics. Another distinctive feature of Soul music includes the emphasis of its melody through clapping of hands and fictile body movements. Another distinguishable characteristic of Soul music is a call and response style by the soloist and the chorus. This is done by exchanging conversations with melody and intense musical quality. It is a decorative musical genre which is adorned with spiritual citing and uplifting sense.

With its rampant popularity, Soul music eventually was divided into subgenres, but with one distinct Soul music appeal. The Motown soul originated from the city of Detroit and it is characterized with a full strong beat and more influenced by gospel music. It is furnished with a funky rhythm, emphasized by hand claps, a coercive bass sound and the accompaniment of violins and bells. Another subgenre is the Deep soul and Southern soul. Its rhythm is motivating and infused with energetic beats of gospel music. On the other hand, opposite to the very energetic nature of Deep soul, the Memphis soul is a reserved and sophisticated subgenre of Soul music. It creates a sensual feeling because of saxophone accompaniments and the melancholic style it brings. This subgenre is described as a sultry Soul music due to its slow melody and shimmering nature. The Philadelphia soul, unlike the Memphis soul is a subgenre filled with orchestra sound and the discrete doo-wop vocals. Other subgenres include the Psychedelic soul, Neo soul, Northern soul and the Blue-eyed soul.

Up to the present times, Soul music is still transforming with even more attention- grabbing rhythm. With the emergence of hip-hop culture, Soul music had found its way to merge with the above genre, thus resulting to a slight to heavy beat rhythm, which is very much enjoyed by listeners. This metamorphosis of Soul music does not put its inspirational impact at stake. Though hip-hop music is quoted as a very liberated genre, its fusing with Soul music still creates individuality between them and Soul music will remain distinguishable forever.
