Planning your first trip Thredbo or one of many, there is always something new to explore if you look for it. I have been skiing and more recently snowboarding Thredbo for some 21 years and I am always looking for new experiences to explore. Here are some of my favourites Flare Run - An old tradition but a good one. Every Saturday night weather permitting Thredbo runs its flare run from the top of Snow Gums chairlift. You need to be at least a strong intermediate skier, able to ski without poles and it can get slippery at night but apart from all that, it is a lot of fun and a great way to kick start your Saturday night. First Tracks – Ok getting up early is not too easy after a big night out but being the first to hit the slopes to make your own tracks is definitely worth it, particularly if Thredbo has received more than a light dusting overnight. It is first in best dressed so make sure you set your alarm early if it’s dumping the night before. Back Country – I must admit I prefer the convenience of lifts to get me up a hill but in early spring when the conditions down the bottom are “marginal” and the weather is clear and sunny, then a day in Thredbo’s backcountry can be an amazing experience. It is a bit pricey to do it with a guide but going alone particularly for your first time is a bit risky, you know people have died up there. Avalanche Course – I must admit I haven’t tried this but I would like to, so I thought it was worth a mention. Thredbo Alpine Adventures runs a two day 1 night avalanche appreciation course. Over the course you will learn how to assess avalanche risks and know where not to ski when you go backcountry. You can even do ice climbing. If this all sounds a bit to adventurous for you, then you can always fall back to one of my personal favourites, grab a pizza, a few jugs of beer and sit on the deck to watch the last of the skiers come down and the sunset on another great day in Thredbo.
