It is reported today that Harriet Harman will today step up her drive to make buying sex illegal. She is going to release new figures showing that if it reduces people trafficking for sexual exploitation then more than half of men and women support the move. It seems Harman who is Labour's deputy leader and the minister for women and equality is also on a personal crusade to highlight cultural double standards such as older men condoning the buying of sex but not the selling of it.

A Home office report has looked into prostitution demand and if it should be illegal to pay for sex. The Home Office minister Vernon Coaker has hinted he will criminalise the purchase of sex if there is a national plea to do so. This survey will give ministers confidence in implementing this measure. Currently it is illegal to sell sex but not to buy it. Harman when commenting on the survey said that the results implied double standards saying that people did not mind the principle of paying for sex but would be ashamed if it was their own daughter selling it.

The Ipsos Morui poll which was conducted in July and August showed that 58% of men and women supported making it illegal to purchase sex if it means sexual exploitation people trafficking was reduced. It was apparent that more women than men were against the paying for and selling of sex but men were not surprisingly much more relaxed about the whole affair with just 40% finding it unacceptable.

Over half of those questioned (60%) male and female would feel ashamed if they found out a family member was working as a prostitute, but men would find it unacceptable if a female relative sold sex but relaxed about a male relative buying it. This was especially typical of older men. Younger people were much more unforgiving about the buying and selling of sex with about 64% saying they found the buying and selling of such a thing unacceptable.

Harman has been allowed to express her personal views about this topic before the review has been complete. Either way, this topic does need some consideration.
