Set a Goal and Congratulate Yourself.

By: Elliott Roberts

Whether you are looking for greater rewards at home or at work, setting goals will put you on the fast track toward that success. Wandering around from task to task might get your to-dos done each day. If you do not write down your to-dos, though, it is very possible that you will forget at least one of them. In either case, you will not achieve your maximum potential because you are neither managing your priorities, nor giving yourself credit when you accomplish those tasks.

Along with a sense of achievement comes great motivation to accomplish more great things, as well as an ease in getting them accomplished. The beginning of this self help success starts with setting goals.

To address goal setting for a wider audience, let's address the misconception that setting goals is just for your career.

This is unfortunate because at home, where we play the roles of spouse, parent, and household manager, organization and achievement are key to all other successes. To those folks I recommend to use the term "life list" instead. When it is time to put pen to paper, if you prefer, scribble "LIFE LIST" at the top of yours. Maybe even put some doodles around it. Whatever makes you excited to continue.

Brainstorming is an effective way to start setting your goals. This has to be done in a quiet place, free of distractions, so you can think about what you want to accomplish in your lifetime. Put aside cost and your perception of what is possible. Write down everything that comes to mind that you want to do and be, today and in the future. This exercise will give you the basis for your goals.

Now you are ready to make your lists. Goals come in many forms. You will start by making a heading of short term goals and another for long term goals.

A long term goal might be to buy a bigger house or become debt free. Take it a step further and in addition to "short term" and "long term", create your own categories so that every thing that came from your brainstorm has a heading under which to sit.

You will be surprised at how attainable some of the most far fetched ideas become as you start to chart your successes and become more productive.
