SSD program and SSI: Helping People with Disabilities

In line with the problem that is caused by disability with regard to the physical state of persons who suffer from it, are the continuous financial difficulties that it also brings. As a way of helping people who are suffering from disability, there are two programs that were created under Social Security which provide financial help to these people. The two programs that were crated to help people with disability in terms of their financial problems are Social Security Disability (SSD) program and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Basics of SSD
Through SSD, benefits are given to people who are unable to work due to a medical condition that they posses which is estimated to last as least a year, or may even result to that person’s death. This program is only concerned on financially helping people who are able to meet their definition if persons with disability, unlike other programs which provide financial help for people with short-term or partial disability.

People who became disabled should immediately apply for a SSD benefit because the time needed in processing a person’s application may take three to five months. People who are applying or are planning to apply for such benefit is obliged to complete a Disability Report and an application for a Social Security Benefit.

• your Social Security number

• medical records form your therapists, doctors, clinics, hospitals, and caseworkers which are already in your possession

• your baptismal or birth certificate

• rundown of what kind of work you did and where you worked

• tests and laboratory results

• a copy of your current Wage and Tax Statement, also known as W-2 for or is self employed, your federal tax return for the previous year.

• Dosage and name of the all the medicines that you take

Things to Know About SSI
SSI is a program that provides monthly payments to people who have low income as well as few resources and are:

• disabled

• 65 years old and older

• blind

Guardian of parents of disabled children can apply for this benefit for them if they are under 18 years old who are disable or blind. In addition, there are cases when third parties are allowed to apply for children.

Certain items are needed when you are applying for a SSI. The following are:

• the addresses, names, and telephone numbers of the hospitals, clinics, and doctors, you have been to, it the reason why you are applying for SSI is because of your disability or blindness

• your birth certificate or other evidence of your age

• your social security or record of your Social Security number

• evidence of an eligible non-citizen status or U.S. citizenship

• information regarding where you live, as well as your mortgage or lease, and name of your landlord

• bank books, insurance policies, burial fund records, as well as other information with regard to the things that you own and your income.
