Online Advertising Nature and Forms

By: Kirthy Shetty

The most popular form of advertising, that one has come across oflate, is contextual advertising. Such advertising scans for particular keywords present in the web page text. It then, returns ads to those web pages depending on what a user is viewing. It can be pop up ads or ads placed on the page.

With the help of contextual advertising, companies can place ads in major websites and portals that are carrying relevant content for their product or service. Target the right audience and get the right traffic towards your web site. Two forms of such ads are visual ads and text ads (similar to pay per click).

Visual adverts work like your banner ads and text adverts work like pay per click ads. Just like Pay per Click, text based contextual ads are usually priced on a performance related cost per click basis. If impressions are higher then the ads can be served in highly targeted locations.

Adverts are originally looked at as a message, or public communication to convey some issues. It persuades a public opinion regarding a specific issue important in the public arena. In this case, it convinces the buyer about the product. Of late, comparative advertising is gaining prominence. Advertising targets at a competitor brand directly or indirectly with one or more competing brands. You must have noticed the airline ads, wherein different airlines, targets at its competitors. Even the punch lines are contradicting the other air lines. Such comparative advertising arrests the viewer’s attention. One drawback of comparative advertising is that customers have become more skeptical about claims made by a company about its competitors because accurate information has not always been provided. Care should be taken not to write anything misleading or incorrect which might instigate the company as you will have to face a law suit.

Billboards and messages painted on the side of buildings are common forms of outdoor advertising, which is often used when quick, simple ideas are being promoted. Since repetition is the key to successful promotion, outdoor advertising is most effective when located along heavily travelled city streets and when the product being promoted can be purchased locally. Only about 1 percent of advertising is conducted in this manner.

Direct Mail marketing includes catalogues, flyers, letters and postcards which are just a few of them. Direct mails have its own advantages, not to forget the price involved too. Apart from direct mails, email marketing is also used to reach out to the masses. Find out online for more effective forms of online advertising.
