You may have noticed that healthy food is often more expensive than junk. There's no doubt 5 peaches cost much more than 5 packs of Ramen Noodles and a box of twinkies probably costs less than a box of strawberries. This doesn't mean eating healthy is more expensive. You have to really know what's healthy in order to make it affordable for you. Have you seen healthy choice prepared meals or lean hot pockets? They are healthier than their alternative t.v. dinners and regular pizza hot pockets, but they usually aren’t cheaper. Guess what? These aren't necessarily healthy choices either. They are full of preservatives and white starches. Prepackaged foods are rarely good for you. It's cheaper and healthier to make your own food. Instead of getting any kind of hot pocket or prepackaged lunch, eat leftovers from the healthy meal you made the night before, make a sandwich on whole grain bread, or make a salad. A simple salad with just a little dressing that you make yourself can easily be made cheaper than a hot pocket, or at worst for the same price. Another thing about healthier food is that they fill you up faster. Think about it, when you eat an apple, do eat three more? When you eat a cookie, do you eat three more? Junk food makes you crave more junk food thus causing you to spend more in the long run. If you are overwhelmed by the price of produce, grow your own. You can plant a small garden and even just include 2 or three different vegetables and it would still help you save money. Plant an orange or apple tree (depending on where you live) and enjoy the fruit of your labor. You can also by produce from a farmer's market during the right season and often get a cheaper price for better quality. Also, eating vegetables doesn't mean you have to get fresh produce. Frozen vegetables are great too and often much cheaper. Finally, even if you spend exactly the same amount on the healthy food itself than you would have junk food, you can still save. The healthier you eat, the healthier you are, and the less likely you will get sick. Don't get sick and you won't have to go to the doctors or pay for medicine. Even if you have insurance, a doctor's visit often charges a co-pay which can eat away at your savings. Eat and stay healthy and reap the rewards of feeling better and saving money!
