By: Eric Minden

To get started we should find out what binge eating disorder really is.

Binge eating is a disorder in which people turn to food to satisfy emotions to be able to cope
with the what these emotions bring. Many people who suffer from binge eating disorder turn to
food when they are feeling depressed, negative, angry, sad, and even when bored.People have used
food as a way to cope for so long it turns in to a habit which then becomes a habit they cannot
break.

Once someone has developed this habit they begin to feel as though they cannot deal with life
and what their lives bring without the comfort of food. Affecting over 20 million people, binge
eating disorder has become the most common eating disorder.

People who binge may experience the following:

-Eating large amounts of food
-Eating quickly, generally more quickly than the average person
-Eating when they do not feel hungry, in other words they eat to eat
-Feelings as though they have no control over themselves when eating
-Would rather eat alone than eat with others around
-Guilt
-Feelings of being ashamed

There are many consequences of binging, which include diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and
heart disease to name a few. Many of these health issues come in to play when the person binging
is not eating foods with the vitamins their body needs to survive and function correctly.

As the cause of this disorder is unknown there are reasons to believe that depression is the biggest
culprit. Also, when people diet they are not allowing themselves to have the foods they desire,
this only makes them want those foods more. As the saying goes, if you tell someone they can't do
something, they will only want to do it more.

There are treatments available for this disorder which usually starts with meeting with a therapist
a few times a week. When these sessions start, the therapist will ask questions to find out why
the patient is suffering from this disorder. After finding a cause they will give suggestions on
how to recover.

Avoiding diets and foods that are high in sugars and fats will help keep you away from this
disorder. If you feel as though you may have this disorder or may develop it in the future,
you should talk to your health care provider as soon as possible, only a doctor can diagnose this
disorder and only a doctor can help in the treatment process.
