Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia -- May 2004 The Canadian offices for HEKA Electronics, Inc. can be found in the picturesque village of Mahone Bay on Nova Scotia’s South Shore. The tiny house in which they produce patch clamp amplifiers for the company’s worldwide sales is crammed with seven employees and technical equipment. There simply wasn’t room for a single additional employee. But thanks to a federal government loan of $198,925, they’re now able to expand the offices as well as hire two more people to grow the business. HEKA, whose parent company is in Germany, produces patch clamp amplifiers for universities, medical research labs and pharmaceutical companies worldwide. The amplifiers record currents from living cells, and are used in neuroscience and cardiology to record synaptic activity from neurons or electrical flow in heart cells. The company was the first to introduce computer-controlled, software-controlled amplifiers, and part of the work done in Mahone Bay house in writing the software to acquire and analyze data. Advice from Marketing Manager Stephen Jones: “Be thorough and have a clear plan as to what you need. Have a clear goal as to why you need support and how it’s going to be spent. And don’t’ be afraid to apply.” www.heka.com SMALL BUSINESS FUNDING REPORT May 2004, Volume VI, Number 2 www.grants-loans.org James Byrne is an Director of http://www.grants-loans.org/; Visit the site (http://www.grants-loans.org) for more information about Canadian Government Grant Loans For Small Businesses.
